SAN DIEGO– Several parts of America’s Finest City are getting major make-overs in 2013.

Changes are coming to the Embarcadero and beyond. Work will begin on a new public park in Horton Plaza and the adjacent San Diego Repertory Theatre will also be remodeled.

“A lot of these projects have been stalled for the last 12 months,” Civic San Diego President Jeff Graham said. “I think that is why we’re going to see a lot of new projects coming out of the ground.”

During the next year construction is scheduled to start on a large park with trails in the South Crest neighborhood and smaller pocket parks in City Heights and North Park.

Civic San Diego is working with members of the to build more parks like the one under construction at 14th and Island in the East Village.

The developer is building a public park over an underground parking garage in exchange for the land and the company will do the long-term maintenance.

“These parks are obviously very expensive to maintain once they are built, so we have been very creative with finding funding sources,” Graham said.

The North Embarcadero Visionary Plan will bring two acres of open gardens along the water, which is already a hit with some visitors.

The new public library has made headlines for years and it’s scheduled to open its doors later this spring.

Finishing touches are also going on a new permanent homeless center downtown and construction will begin on affordable housing projects in the East Village and Logan heights.
