escondido-police-crimeESCONDIDO, Calif. — An investigation was under way Monday following the shooting death of a man in his late 20s in Escondido.

Officers received multiple reports that someone had been shot in the area of 800 East Mission Avenue just before 9 p.m. Sunday, according to Escondido police Lt. Mike Loarie.

Once there, officers found a man in his late 20s on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound in his torso, Loarie said in a statement. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died around 9:30 p.m., the lieutenant said.

“The motive for the shooting is not yet clear,” Loarie said, adding that detectives are conducting an investigation.

“Based up the information EPD has gained thus far, it appears there was a disturbance that turned to a fight in the street and surrounding area,” he said.

Based on witness descriptions, police were looking for a short, stocky Hispanic man in his mid-20s, last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes.
