LAKESIDE, Calif. – Two hikers who got lost and were unprepared for the cold were rescued from a ravine on El Cajon Mountain near Lakeside, and one was taken to a hospital, a sheriff’s sergeant said Saturday.
A 46-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man called for help from a cell phone while on the mountain about 5:40 p.m. Friday and told sheriff’s officials they were lost, cold, wet and unprepared for the bad weather, Sgt. Mike Forbes said.
A helicopter was dispatched and its crew determined the hikers were on the El Monte side of the mountain, but they could not spot pair due to the weather.
A search and rescue team was then sent to comb the area, Forbes said.
Once the rain let up, the helicopter crew spotted the hikers in a ravine area and hoisted them to safety, Forbes said.
The woman was reportedly shivering uncontrollably and was taken to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, the sergeant said.
The man was taken to his vehicle.
