San Diego Bomb SquadSAN DIEGO — A bomb squad detonated an inert military-style grenade found Tuesday afternoon on the grounds of Crawford High School.

Campus police discovered the device about 2:15 p.m. near an athletic field toward the back of the El Cerrito-area campus, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Ordnance-disposal personnel looked over the device, then used a remote-control mechanism to blow it apart, discovering that it had been “modified” and contained no explosive materials, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

No evacuations were necessary, as classes had let out for the day by the time emergency crews arrived, according to Luque.

The origin of the device was unknown.
