A chain-reaction crash involving up to 15 vehicles caused a traffic jam in Interstate 15 in North County Thursday morning

POWAY, Calif. — A chain-reaction pileup involving as many as 15 vehicles turned Interstate 15 in North County into a traffic nightmare Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-15 near Scripps Poway Parkway. It was dark and foggy at the time, but it was not immediately clear what caused the initial crash.

Three lanes were closed for more than two hours while crews cleared wrecked vehicles and the California Highway Patrol investigated the accident. There were no reports of serious injuries.

Two northbound lanes remained open, but traffic quickly backed up to at least Miramar Road. Southbound traffic also backed up as drivers slowed to see what was happening on the other side of the freeway.

By 7:15 a.m., the CHP began reopening northbound lanes, but the traffic jam continued through most of the morning commute.
