FOX 5 KSWB offers a variety of internship opportunities for students interested in careers in broadcast television. Our internship program provides students hands-on experience working with talented broadcast professionals. In addition, interns may earn the chance to shadow news crews in the field and produce their own intern newscast. Currently there are opportunities to intern in the following departments:

NEWS:

News interns will learn the basics of news writing and/or have the opportunity to apply classroom writing skills in a real newsroom. Interns will help with script writing, script formatting, segment producing, guest coordinating, logging sound bites and sort/run anchor scripts. They’ll also help the assignment desk make phone calls to research stories and learn writing for the Web. Interns will receive feedback from seasoned news writers, producers and reporters to improve writing and communication skills. Interns may also get the opportunity to work on an intern newscast — anchoring, reporting, producing and writing their own show as a special project.
SPORTS:

Sports interns will help write sports scripts/packages, editing sports highlights, and log highlights of sporting events. Interns may also earn the opportunity to accompany the sports crew in the field at various sporting events and shadow the sports photographer and reporters.
PRODUCTION:

Production interns have the opportunity to observe the behind-the-scenes personnel that support a live newscast. Interns will interact with editors, floor crew and control room technicians in a high-pressure environment. They will learn the technical skills needed to prepare and execute a live broadcast and meet deadlines. Students will get hands-on practice on cutting edge production equipment with 1-on-1 instruction from the production staff.
CREATIVE SERVICES:

Creative Service interns are students who interested in TV or film production with an emphasis on creative disciplines: writing, shooting, directing, editing, lighting and graphics design for TV promotion and commercials.

Applicants should have a solid background in social and digital media, some video knowledge such as shooting and editing, using HD cameras and Final Cut Pro type editing software. Additionally they may have skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and similar programs.

Interns will earn opportunities to help with on-location and studio shoots, observe editing, and possibly edit some projects themselves if they have the aptitude and skills.
SALES & MARKETING:

As a Sales and Marketing intern, you will learn how to leverage television and digital assets to help businesses achieve their marketing objectives. Interns will attend sales meetings and trainings and participate on actual sales calls to gain insight into the sales process. They will also assist Marketing Consultants in creating proposals for actual prospects. They will get training and hands on experience with Marketing Applications such as: One Domain, Prime Next, Wide Orbit, Polk, and Media Center Online. Interns will gain valuable experience working closely with Marketing Consultants on all aspects of the Sales and Marketing process.
Internship Periods:

  • Fall Semester (August – December) Deadline to Apply: July 30  *** NOT OFFERED FALL 2013. PLEASE APPLY FOR SPRING SEMESTER 2014 ***
  • Spring Semester (January – May) Deadline to Apply: November 15
  • Summer Semester or Quarter (June – August) Deadline to Apply: April 30

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college, university or technical school
  • Must be a Junior or Senior
  • Internships are unpaid, therefore, students MUST earn college credit through an internship class.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 15 hours/week during the academic year
