Jenn Karlman

Jenn_KarlmanThey’re buried somewhere in my family’s “save box,” but they do exist… VHS tapes from family vacations with yours truly at the tender of age of nine, narrating as a newscaster. My signature line was, “Jenn Karlman Channel 2 News, now back to you Dave.” Dave is my dad’s name.

I have always wanted to be a television broadcaster, and I couldn’t be happier at FOX 5 San Diego. I went to middle school and high school in Rancho Bernardo, then moved to Arizona where I attended the University of Arizona.

Television news is certainly about “paying your dues,” and my story followed that trajectory. My career started in the Tri-Cities, WA where I anchored the 5, 6 & 10 p.m. news, and did just about every other job in the newsroom. The ABC affiliate in Green Bay, WI called in 2006. I was blessed to anchor a morning show and live in the town of my favorite NFL team. Despite wicked weathers and live shots in May covered in snow, the Midwest has a wonderful place in my heart.

That brought me to back California in 2009. After freelancing as a reporter for FOX 5, I helped launch the FOX 5 News at 5 p.m. in September 2011 with Loren Nancarrow.

I believe we have a duty to mentor the future, and be positive example for those in the present. I feel so blessed and thankful to have supportive parents, an incredibly gracious husband, and unwavering friends along my journey.

I’m known around the newsroom for… laughing (nickname “Giggles”), being a hardcore Packers fan, and almost always being cold.

If I wasn’t in TV news, I would… be a singer (if I could sing) or be on TV with my cooking show. I love to cook and still hold the dream of taking my passion on the road.

What is something no one knows about me? I used to speak fluent Spanish when I lived in Spain in 2002. A decade of not constant Spanish speaking and I have lost a significant part of my bilingual skills.

On my days off, I can be found… spending time with my hubby outside, exercising and going to the farmers market.

My most memorable TV moment  -I had only been on the air a couple months in my first job and I was solo anchoring for the first time. As soon as we started the show, instead of saying “Good Evening, I’m Jenn Karlman.” I said my co-anchors’ name because that’s what was in the teleprompter. Oops!

My greatest TV moment-coverage of some major weather storms in both Washington and Wisconsin. We were LIVE for several hours in each state, one during a horrible rain storm and another after a Cat 5 Tornado.

I give back to my community by… volunteering my time to causes close to my heart. Raising awareness on the epidemic of prescription drug abuse as well as simply being a mentor to young people are two areas I am passionate about.

Dinner for 5 – who’s invited? Dan my fiancé –because he’s just fun to hang out with. Aaron Rodger-GB Packers Quarterback (Huge fan) John Adams—He was such a pivotal person in the development of this country and I would want to just ask him a ton of questions. Will Farrell– “I’m Ron Burgandy??” Tom Brokaw—I loved watching him as I developed my journalism career.

If I had free time, I would… sleep more. If I had more free time and money, I would eat out at fancy restaurants.

My guilty pleasure is … cooking an decadent dinner, eating Hagaan-Daz ice cream and watching the Real Housewives of Orange County.
