Sharon Chen joined the Fox 5 team in 2012 and has covered some of San Diego’s top headlines including the massive May wildfires of 2014, the fallout of Mayor Bob Filner, Comic-Con and of course the daily breaking news of America’s Finest City. Sharon’s passion for news and drive to find a story keep’s San Diegans well informed.
Before joining the Fox 5 team, Sharon was a reporter and anchor at the CW affiliate San Diego 6 News. She first came to San Diego from Honolulu, Hawaii where she was a reporter/anchor at KHNL-TV. In the beautiful islands of Hawaii, Sharon covered island life in the bustling city of Honolulu to the smaller island communities of Kauai, Lanai and Molokai.
Her most memorable stories include the historical journey of the Polynesian ship Hokulea, she was also one of few crews to experience the power of Hurricane Jimena as she hunkered down in the tiny town of Hilo, on the Big Island Hawaii.
Sharon took the first steps of her broadcasting career in Scottsbluff, Nebraska where she was an Anchor, Reporter, Photographer and Producer at KDUH-TV. From there she moved to KOLN/KGIN-TV in Lincoln. After 4 years in the Cornhusker state, Sharon moved to the beautiful Front Range community of Colorado Springs where she was reporter/anchor at KOAA TV.
Sharon was born in Chicago, but raised in the college rich town of Claremont, California. She graduated from California State University, San Bernardino with a degree in Communications and Broadcast Journalism. She also attended the University of California, Los Angeles.
When Sharon isn’t at a breaking news scene, you might find her in the kitchen experimenting to find a new culinary delight. She also loves to spend time with her family. Her favorite moments are reading or playing peek-a-boo with her young daughter, Riley.
What’s on your iPod? Duran Duran. Don’t judge, I’m a child of the 80s. I also like Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran and at the gym, I like rocking out to the Black Eyed Peas.
Which professional sport would you play and why? As my husband will tell you, I’m not that coordinated. I’m more of an individual sports kind of gal, I like skiing and hiking – if you can consider hiking a sport.
If you were not in TV news, what profession would you choose? A Veterinarian, I love animals, but I’m allergic to cats.
What’s something that no one knows about you? My great great granduncle is Chen Bao Shen, the tutor of China’s last Emperor.
Dinner for 5, who would you invite? Audrey Hepburn, Mike my Husband, Riley (daughter, Sammy Hagar (for the hubs) and God (so many questions-I’m a journalist).
