Water main break floods Santee street

SANTEE, Calif. -- A water main break shut down a major road in Santee Tuesday night, snarling traffic in the area at rush hour.

A recycled water pipe burst on Mission Gorge Road, causing thousands of gallons of water to spill out onto the major thoroughfare.

"Quite a bit of pressure buckled the road," said Allen Carlisle, CEO and general manager of the Padre Dam Municipal Water District. "You can see the asphalt severely damaged Mission Gorge."

Crews closed Mission Gorge Road between Fanita Drive and Carlton Hills Boulevard as a precaution.

Carlisle said the pipe is part of the recycled water system, so the pipe itself is relatively new. That water is mainly used for irrigation, so no homes or businesses were affected.

Carlisle said the cause of the rupture was still being investigated.

Crews were expected to work on the repair throughout the night.
