Man shot by deputy along highway in Santee

SANTEE, Calif. – A man was taken to a hospital Friday night after he was shot by a deputy along state Route 125 in Santee.

Shortly before 7 p.m., deputies received a call to check the welfare of a man who was threatening to commit suicide, according to Rich Williams of the Sheriff's Homicide Unit.

Deputies found the man in his parked vehicle on the shoulder of the northbound lanes between the Grossmont College Drive and Mission Gorge Road exits. Deputies contacted the man, who was uncooperative. The man got out of his vehicle and had what appeared to be a handgun.

A deputy fired a weapon at the man. Deputies rendered first aid at the scene before the man was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

No deputies were hurt and there are no outstanding suspects.

All northbound lanes on SR-125 between Navajo Road and Grossmont College Drive were shut down.
