SAN DIEGO — Monday is the last day San Diego County landowners can pay the first installment of their property taxes without incurring a 10 percent penalty.

County Treasurer-Tax Collector offices in downtown San Diego, Kearny Mesa, Chula Vista, El Cajon or San Marcos will stay open until 7 p.m. The downtown location is the only one that accepts cash.

Taxpayers can also pay by electronic check at the county website, which is free. Payments made by credit card over the phone at 855-829-3773 or online will have a 2.19 percent fee added, according to the county.

More than 989,000 bills were sent out in September, and are expected to generate $5.66 billion in revenue, county officials said.

The second property tax installment is due Feb. 1 and will be considered delinquent after April 10, according to the county.
