SAN DIEGO - A nude man fought with officers trying to take him into custody following a disturbance at his Valencia Park home early Monday and died of unknown causes during the struggle, authorities reported.

The patrol personnel arrived at the house in the 1400 block of Greycourt Way shortly after 3 a.m. to find the 53-year-old resident naked in his front yard, according to San Diego police.

When the six officers tried to detain the man, he resisted, and during the scuffle he passed out and stopped breathing, Lt. Mike Holden said.

Medics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death was not immediately clear.

Authorities withheld the man's name pending family notification.

Neighbors say he was always friendly and helpful to people who lived on the street and would sometimes help garden.

"We have a nice neighborhood. It's always quiet except for the incident. It's has me all upset because he's my gardener, too," said Soledad Foster.

Police were wearing body cameras during the incident.

It has not been confirmed whether or not the man was under the influence during the encounter.
