Tsunami watch canceled for Hawaii
SAN DIEGO – A tsunami watch was issued Thursday for Hawaii after a strong earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands was canceled about an hour later.
The 7.7 magnitude quake was centered about 39 miles from Kirakira Island in the Solomon chain at 9:48 a.m. San Diego time. The Pacivic Tsunami Warning Center at Ewa Beach, Hawaii, issued a tsunami watch after the quake, but it canceled the watch at 10:36 a.m.
“Based on all available data there is no tsunami threat to the state of Hawaii,” the center said.
The Solomon Islands are more than 3,500 miles southwest from Honolulu.
