Gunmen kill one, wound another on South Bay street

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — An investigation was underway Wednesday into a gang-related shooting that left one man dead and a second wounded in a Chula Vista neighborhood.

Patrol officers who were close enough to hear the gunshots found the two men suffering from bullet wounds in the vicinity of Kearney Street and Church Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Chula Vista police statement.

Witnesses told investigators that two or three men —  believed to be in their 20s and dressed in hooded sweatshirts and denim jeans — opened fire on the victims, then ran off, Lt. Fritz Reber said.

Both victims were taken to a hospital to be treated, but one was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m. Police said the other victim’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses told investigators that two or three men dressed in hooded sweatshirts opened fire on the victims, then ran off. A detailed description of the suspects was not provided, and there were no immediate arrests, police said.
