Flaring spotted at former ExxonMobile refinery; 100,000 nearby customers without power

TORRANCE, Calif. — A large flaring event and power outage was spotted Tuesday morning at the former ExxonMobile refinery in Torrance.

Large flames were coming from the refinery, now owned by PBF Energy, just before 6 a.m. as Sky5 was flying near the area.

Power appeared to be out at the refinery and in the areas surrounding the facility, video showed.

Power outages were reported in Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Hawthorne, Westmont and Gardena, according to Southern California Edison.

More than 100,000 customers were without power, according to the SCE website.

PBF Energy assumed ownership of the refinery in July, according to the Daily Breeze.

There was no official word on what may have caused the flaring event.
