The accident on the eastbound freeway approaching the Greenfield Drive exit was reported shortly before midnight, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators said a white Toyota sedan hit the man as he was walking in between the two right lanes of the freeway.
The couple in the car told investigators that they continued driving after hitting the man and pulled off the freeway at a Mobil gas station because they were afraid to stop on the freeway. Video of the car showed heavy damage to the right front and passenger side of the Toyota.
The injured man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He died several hours later. Authorities were working to determine the man's identity and whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Toyota's driver was not driving under the influence and was not cited for the crash, according to the CHP.
The fatal crash prompted authorities to close two eastbound lanes and issue a SigAlert, but the roadway was cleared around 1 a.m., according to the CHP.
