SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls squandered a two-goal lead, but prevailed in a shootout to defeat the Ontario Reign, 4-3, Thursday at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario in the preseason opener for both teams.
Ondrej Kase scored for the Gulls on the next-to-last shot of the shootout and Kevin Boyle stopped Daniel Ciampini’s shot to give the Gulls a 2-1 victory in the shootout.
Gulls left wing Kevin Roy scored to open the shootout. The Reign’s second shooter, Quentin Shore, scored what proved to be its only shootout goal.
Ontario right wing Miles Koules scored with four minutes, 28 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score.
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime, forcing the shootout.
An unassisted goal by Roy at 2:47 into the second period and Stefan Noesen’s goal off a turnover at 12:08 of the second period gave the Gulls a 3-1 lead.
Ontario cut the deficit to 3-2 on Lucas Lessio’s goal with 10:31 left in regulation.
Noesen opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 20 seconds left in the first period.
The Reign, the Los Angeles Kings American Hockey League affiliate, tied the score 32 seconds into the second period on Corey Ward’s goal.
Starting goaltender Matt Hackett stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced in the opening 30:02 for the Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate. Boyle, who played for the UMass Lowell last season, stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced in the final 34:58.
Reign starting goaltender Jack Flinn stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced in the opening 30:02. Jonah Imoo stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced in the final 34:58.
The Gulls scored on one of their three power-play opportunities and killed both of Ontario’s power-play opportunities.
