La Jolla, Ca.,- Just beyond Point La Jolla lies an underwater memorial dedicated to spear fishermen and freedivers. The tradition began back in the 1930's with the La Jolla-based "Bottom Scratchers," the first spear fishing club in North America.
Local diver Volker Hoene is the keeper of "Tombstones," cleaning the roughly seventy-five stone and cement markers twice a year.
