NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — A small brush fire near Westfield Plaza Bonita mall forced the temporary closure of a nearby freeway ramp Friday.

The non-injury blaze erupted about 9:30 a.m. in a heavily overgrown area frequented by homeless people off Ring Road, in the Sweetwater River bed, according to the National City Fire Department.

The California Highway Patrol shut down the Bonita Road entrance to northbound Interstate 805 while crews doused the flames.

It took personnel from National City, San Diego, Chula Vista and Bonita about 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze, NCFD Battalion Chief Mark Beveridge said.

No structures were ever threatened by the fire, which blackened a roughly 200- by 200-foot area, Beveridge said. The cause was under investigation.
