SAN DIEGO – A woman walking on a high-speed freeway offramp was struck and killed by an airport shuttle van near Lindbergh Field early Sunday.

California Highway Patrol officers said a Super Shuttle van was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 at 1:35 a.m. and exited the freeway at the Sassafras Street/Kettner Boulevard offramp.

It hit a woman who was believed to be about 53 years old, a CHP spokesman said.

The offramp was closed for about two hours while the CHP conducted its investigation.

No other injuries were reported and the CHP did not say whether the shuttle was carrying any passengers when the crash occurred.

The ramp itself does not have a speed limit, but motorists are advised to drive on it at 40 miles per hour. It is straight and does not have a signal or stop sign where it transitions to the freeway access road, Hancock Street.
