LA MESA, Calif. – Police continued searching for a driver of a stolen car in La Mesa who allegedly tried to assault an officer Thursday morning.

La Mesa police officers were called to Maryland Avenue near Oakland Road where a man was sleeping in a car in front of a home.  When they arrived just after 10 a.m., the man woke up and tried to drive off, according to investigators.

The man drove through the front yard of a home, then into a backyard before crashing into a fence. He jumped out of the car and ran away, investigators said.

“The officer opened the door to speak with the suspect and the vehicle almost hit the officer as it took off,” LMPD Lt. Chad Bell said.  “We’re looking for him now… sounds like he ran through some yards. We found out the vehicle was stolen.”

The officer was not injured.

Police said the man is white, between the ages of 20 to 30 years old, heavily tattooed with a shaved head.

Anyone who may have information about the case has been asked to contact La Mesa Police Department.
