Swarm of small quakes rattles Salton Sea

BOMBAY BEACH, Calif. — A swarm of at least a dozen small earthquakes shook up the Salton Sea area in Imperial County Monday morning. the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The first was a 2.6 magnitude temblor that hit at 5:38  a.m. a couple of miles southeast of Bombay Beach on the eastern shore of the Salton sea. south of the Riverside County boundary, according to a computer-generated USGS statement.

The strongest quakes were a 3.3 magnitude temblor at 6:14 a.m and a 4.3 magnitude shaper at 7:31 a.m.

More than half a dozen smaller quakes followed, all but one of them measuring less than magnitude 3. There were no reports of serious damage.

Bombay Beach is about 150 miles east of San Diego.
