SAN DIEGO – An accidental discharge from a handgun resulted in a federal agent shooting a deputy the leg Monday night, officials said.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy and other members of a joint task force investigation in El Cajon Monday returned to the Lemon Grove Sub Station to turn in evidence found during the service of a search warrant. While attempting to unload a seized .22 handgun, a federal agent accidentally fired a round, hitting the sheriff’s deputy in the lower leg, officials said.

The deputy was driven to a hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Names of the injured deputy and the federal agent were not released.
