SAN DIEGO – A 64-year-old man hiking on Cowles Mountain collapsed and died on the trail Sunday.

The San Diego Fire Rescue Department received a 911 call at about 7:30 a.m. from the man’s hiking partner, who said that he had collapsed, spokesman Lee Swanson said.

A rescue helicopter lowered a paramedic to the trail, about three-quarters from the top of the mountain at 8 a.m. The paramedic took over life saving efforts from someone else on the trail who had already begun CPR, Swanson said.

The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m. on the trail.

Firefighters brought his body down the mountain to the Barker Way trail head in San Carlos, where they turned it over to the medical examiner’s office.
