BRENTWOOD, New York -- A teenage girl was found beaten to death Tuesday night and on Wednesday a second body was found matching the description of her missing friend.
The body of 15-year-old Nisa Mickens was found by a passing motorist Tuesday night just outside the gate of Loretta Park Elementary School. The teenager had at least 10 significant injuries, which led police to believe she had been beaten to death and may have been struck by a vehicle.
A second body was found a day later in a wooded area in Brentwood that matched the description of Mickens' friend, 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas.
Mickens' family says they believe gang members tried to kidnap the two girls as they were walking near the school. Investigators say Mickens appeared to try fighting off the kidnappers, but was killed, her body left alongside the road.
Investigators spoke with Mickens' family, who are distraught.
"I have to bury my child," wailed Elizabeth Alvorado, Nisa's mother, in front of their home.
Wednesday would have been Mickens' 16th birthday.
