Historic rescue truck comes to San Diego on 15th anniversary of 9-11

SAN DIEGO -- As we near the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, a historic rescue truck is coming to San Diego County as part of the Coast to Coast Remembrance Tour.

Eleven firefighters from FDNY Rescue 5 lost their lives trying to save others at the World Trade Center on 9-11.

Even with the loss of its crew, the truck was able to go back into service and continued to serve the residents of New York City until 2011, when it became part of the Remembrance Rescue Project.

The project was created by firefighters to restore, preserve and share Rescue 5 from 9/11 as an educational tool, historical artifact and memorial.

Rescue 5 will be on display at many YMCA locations throughout San Diego County until November. Viewing begin at the Toby Wells Family YMCA on Thursday from 9 until 11 a.m.
