Crash involving police SUV jams downtown intersection

SAN DIEGO – A crash involving an unmarked police cruiser and a traveler on the way to the airport closed a busy downtown intersection during the Monday morning commute.

The collision happened just after 5 a.m. when  a black SUV being driven by an on-duty police lieutenant crashed into a grey SUV at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Ash Street.

The driver of the grey SUV was heading west on Ash on the way to the airport when he ran a red light and entered the intersection, police said. The police SUV was headed south on 4th Avenue and hit the other vehicle on the passenger side.

No one was injured in the crash, but police closed the intersection for about two and a half hours during the subsequent investigation and cleanup. By 8 a.m., all streets were reopened, but traffic was jammed on 4th and 5th avenues and Ash Street during the busiest part of the morning commute.
