Shipyard worker hit while helping freeway crash victim

SAN DIEGO -- A crash on a freeway connector east of downtown San Diego Friday left at least one motorist with major injuries.

The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. on the connector road from southbound state Route 15 to westbound SR-94. The exact number of vehicles involved in the crash was not immediately clear, but it could be as many as three.

Navy shipyard worker Randy Fischer witnessed the accident on his way to work and stopped to help.

A third vehicle came upon the scene and struck Fischer, throwing him into the ice plants.  He suffered bruises and cuts to the face, but refused treatment.

The wrecked vehicles were blocking the connector road.
