SAN DIEGO – Flames fully engulfed a big rig on Interstate 8 through Alpine Monday prompting officers to block westbound traffic, California Highway Patrol said.

CHP blocked two lanes heading west on I-8 near Tavern Road around 11:40 a.m. to allow firefighters access to the burning truck. Firefighters were able to stop the fire within 10 minutes and one lane of traffic was reopened by noon.

The fire did not spread to any brush along the freeway.

One lane will remain closed until 2 p.m. as crews clean up the damaged semi-truck.

It was unknown if anyone was injured and what caused the fire.
