CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Three people were injured Sunday evening in a crash involving a Carlsbad police car and a pickup truck.

The incident was reported at 7:38 p.m. near Poinsettia Lane and El Fuerte Street, according to California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP,  41-year-old Juvenal Gonzalez ran a red light, causing the collision.

Gonzalez was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hosptial La Jolla with severe head injuries.  Police say he had been drinking.

Two police officers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

“All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on our local roadways by intoxicated or drug-impaired drivers,” said CHP Sergeant Eric Nicholas.  “Even law enforcement officers, who try valiantly to protect the public from such reckless individuals, can and do fall victim, too.”
