SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- A shooting in San Marcos early Thursday left a 20-year-old woman injured and a 21-year-old man behind bars.

Gunfire was reported at a house party in the 600 block of Helmsdale Road near Aberdeen Avenue around 3:30 a.m. The shooting happened inside the home and a witness ran outside to call police.

A young woman was taken to a nearby hospital after being shot in her upper leg at close range.  Witnesses told San Diego Sheriff's deputies that the gunman ran from the home after the shooting.  A short time later, 21-year-old Rufus Runnels returned to the party and was arrested after witnesses identified him as the gunman, sheriff's Lt. Dave Schaller said.

"I'm not certain why he came back. Maybe he didn't realize we were actually here yet," Schaller said. "It's not unheard of, but it is a little odd that somebody runs back like that into a home."

Investigators are working to determine a motive in the shooting.
