The driver told investigators that he was headed west on I-8 when noticed flames shooting from the read of his trailer just after 1 a.m. He immediately pulled over the truck in the emergency lane near Mollison Avenue and called 911.
The California Highway Patrol shut down two lanes of westbound I-8 while firefighters put out the blaze. Crews had to remove 40,000 lbs. of frozen chicken before the damaged trailer could be hauled away.
Investigators said the fire was apparently caused by a mechanical failure involving the rear tires or brakes.
All lanes of the freeway reopened around 6 a.m.
