Cars trapped when mall parking structure floods

SAN DIEGO – About a dozen cars were trapped Tuesday night when the rain-swollen San Diego River flooded a parking structure at the Fashion Valley Mall.

A record 1.65 inches of rain fell in San Diego Tuesday, causing the river to rise from about 2 feet to 12 feet. Water from the river flowed into the lower level of the parking structure behind Macy's, submerging the handful of cars that had not left the structure.

By Wednesday morning, the river level had fallen to about 8 feet, but some of the roads in the shopping center were still flooded, as was the lower level of the parking structure. Portions of the parking lot remained closed Wednesday, but the mall planned to open for business as normal.
