SAN DIEGO- Crashes claimed three lives in the San Diego area over the long New Year’s weekend, authorities said Monday.

During the same 78-hour period, the California Highway Patrol arrested 47 motorists on suspicion of driving while intoxicated on local roadways, the state agency reported.

Statewide, 27 people died in vehicle crashes and 923 drivers were jailed on DUI charges between 6 p.m. Thursday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, according to the CHP.
