Stephanie Ramirez, 25, of Temecula was driving a 2016 Mazda on Highway 371 when, for unknown reasons, she drifted to the right of the road and into a dirt embankment, overturning the car.

The three-year-old was killed, while Ramirez and a six-year-old girl sustained major injuries.

Riverside County firefighters said all three were trapped and had to be cut out of the vehicle by nine firefighters, before being taken to a hospital.

The CHP and the Riverside County coroner were working on the investigation. the child’s name and relationship to the driver were not released.

All three victims were wearing seatbelts during the crash, CHP said. Ramirez was not immediately cited, the CHP office said, but there was no indication if she was facing a citation.

Route 371 is a narrow, two-lane road that is often used as a shortcut linking the Coachella Valley with Temecula and North County.
