DA staffer killed granddaughter, self with drug overdose
SAN DIEGO — A longtime county employee found dead, along with her teenage granddaughter, in their home near Mount Helix two months ago killed the girl with a prescription-drug overdose before taking her own life in the same manner, authorities reported Friday.
A report of a foul odor emanating from the house in the 4100 block of Avoyer Place in Casa de Oro led to the discovery of the bodies of Marshelle Marie Newby, 55, and 16-year-old Emily Kaminski on the morning of Oct. 14. They appeared to have been dead for about a week, according to sheriff’s officials.
Autopsies and related investigation determined that Newby, a legal secretary who had been employed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for 23 years, killed the teen and committed suicide, Lt. Kenn Nelson said.
A note was found near the bodies, which were on a bed in a back room, Nelson said. He declined to disclose the contents of the message.
