Annual Shop with a Cop event serves 330 children
SAN DIEGO – More than 300 San Diego kids were treated to SeaWorld passes and a shopping spree at Target Saturday as part of the 22nd Annual Shop With a Cop event.
Hundreds of uniformed officers and 330 children descended on SeaWorld at 7:15 a.m. for a special breakfast and private showing of the “Pets Rule Christmas” animal show. Each child was also gifted with a four-pack of tickets to go back to SeaWorld with their family and friends.
The kids then got to ride with their partnered officers in a motorcade from SeaWorld Drive to Ingraham Street and down Sports Arena Boulevard where they landed at Target. Each child was treated to a $150 shopping spree at the big box store.
The kids were selected to participate from elementary school counselors and teachers as well as officer referrals.
San Diego Police Department Lt. Scott Wahl said the event promotes positive interaction between police officers and children. Wahl said officers raised $52,000 this year alone to sponsor the event through holding fundraisers such as a BBQ and softball tournament. Over the course of the 22 years Shop With a Cop has been held, officers have raised more than $550,000 and helped more than 6,000 kids, according to Wahl.
Law enforcement officers from over 30 different local, state and federal agencies participated in the event hosted by the SDPD. The event was sponsored by the Sports Training, Academics, Recreation/ Police Athletic League, San Diego Crime Commission, SeaWorld and Target.
