Vespa driver hit by SUV after running red light
SAN DIEGO — A 35-year-old man suffered a serious leg injury when he ran a red light on his scooter and rode into the path of a turning SUV in the Morena neighborhood, police said Thursday.
The rider of a southbound Vespa scooter was splitting lanes as he approached the intersection of Morena Boulevard and Napa Street shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and failed to stop as the light turned red, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.
The scooter struck the front of a SUV that had been stopped in the northbound left turn lane, but had begun to make a legal U-turn as the light turned green, Heims said.
The rider suffered an open fracture to his right femur, but the 48-year- old man behind the wheel of the SUV and his passengers were not hurt, according to the officer. Neither motorist was suspected of drunken driving, he said.
