EL CAJON, Calif. -- Two thieves that targeted three businesses in East County are on the loose.
One of the businesses had a new surveillance camera system set up a week before the break-in and caught the crime on video.
Crest Equipment Inc. is a family-run civil engineering company based in El Cajon. On Sunday, more than $5,000 worth of equipment and tools were stolen out of their lot by two men driving a silver Kia with an out-of-state license plate.
Just before 3 p.m., the men were seen on surveillance video stopping in front of the business five times. One man got out of the car to check the gate and to see if there was anyone in the business.
A short time later, the chain locks of the business were cut and the silver Kia drove into the lot. Two men got out of the vehicle and began grabbing tools from trucks and a large storage container.
The family that owns Crest Equipment said this was not the first time crooks have broken into their lot to steal things, but also said thieves are becoming more brazen.
The timing of the theft is also dampening the holiday spirit of some local children who are also being affected. For the last 12 years, Crest Equipment has donated bikes and helmets to local schools during the holidays. This year they said they will be $5,000 short in donations because they need to replace the items stolen.
Crest Equipment is offering a cash reward for anyone who can provide information that will lead to an arrest of the two thieves.
Anyone with information is urged to call the El Cajon Sheriff's Department.
