EL CAJON, Calif. – Several pets were okay Tuesday morning after fast-acting neighbors jumped in to save them from a burning home in El Cajon, firefighters said.

Neighbors called 911 when they saw the small house at 1154 West Chase Avenue on fire. No one was home, though several dogs were trapped inside, firefighters said. Neighbors went inside the home and managed to get them out before firefighters arrived at the scene.

El Cajon police shut down the street in both directions while firefighters battled the blaze, which they believe may have started in the kitchen. Crews managed to knock the flames down in about 15 minutes. No one was hurt.

The home was badly damaged by the fire. Investigators were trying to determine what started the fire.
