At least seven gunshots were fired from inside a dark SUV that pulled up alongside the victims' 1995 Lexus sedan in the eastbound lanes near Los Coches Road around 1 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.
The 43-year-old Alpine woman behind the wheel of the Lexus and her passenger, a 31-year-old San Diego man, were both wounded. Pearlstein said they were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego to be treated for non-life- threatening injuries.
It was not immediately clear whether there was an altercation prior to the gunfire or if the victims were shot at random.
The eastbound freeway was temporarily closed while officers searched for evidence, but it later reopened, Pearlstein said.
Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the CHP at 619-401-2000.
