CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Students and friends gathered Wednesday to remember two South Bay teachers killed in a crash earlier this month.

Henry and Pam Gutierrez were killed Oct. 10 in a single-car accident near Indio on Interstate 10. They were driving home from Arizona and were going to stop in Palm Springs to see their daughter.

Both were teachers with the Sweetwater School District. Henry worked at National City Middle School teaching world culture. Pam was a psychology teacher at Hilltop High School.

To honor their lives and time in education, people crowded into the school gym for a memorial.

"My mom and dad touched so many people over the years, their memory is going to go on in a good way, they would be so thankful and proud of everyone here," said Debra Sloan, the couple's daughter.

Two hours after the memorial ended, students, past and present, staged a candlelight vigil in honor of the couple. They marched through the campus all the way to Pam's classroom.

The couple had been married for 44 years.
