SAN DIEGO — An East County man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of fatally beating his 72-year-old roommate.

Detectives arrested Michael Patrick O’Donnell, 56, on Tuesday evening in connection with the death of Richard Hobbs of El Cajon.

About 8:30 p.m. Oct. 13, officers responding to a reported assault in the home the men shared in the 1000 block of Pine Drive found Hobbs suffering from severe head injuries, according to police.

Medics took him to a hospital, where he later died, Lt. Frank La Haye said.

The lieutenant did not disclose what led investigators to identify O’Donnell as the suspected assailant, and the motive for the alleged slaying was unclear.

O’Donnell was being held in San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
