EL CAJON, Calif. – A 21-year-old woman accused of driving drunk and fatally striking a 55-year-old Texas resident and seriously injuring her husband is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the courthouse in El Cajon.

Katie L. Ellison is suspected of causing the Sept. 25 accident that killed Lorraine Kennedy of Brenham, Texas, and injured David Sandel, her spouse. The victims were in Lakeside to attend a grandchild’s birthday party, according to news reports.

Witnesses told CHP investigators that Ellison did not have her lights on and was traveling fast in the 12200 block of Woodside Avenue just after 8 p.m. when she slammed into Kennedy and Sandel as they crossed the street after having dinner at a Mexican restaurant with family members.

A witness said one of Kennedy’s sons performed CPR on his mother until paramedics arrived. Kennedy was taken to a hospital, but died shortly afterward from blunt force trauma, authorities said.

Ellison also suffered major injuries when her Toyota Yaris struck the victims. A witness said Ellison was lying in the roadway following the crash and bystanders were assisting her. Authorities have not said whether she was wearing a seatbelt.

Ellison was taken to the UC San Diego Trauma Center following the crash.
