Man hit by car after stumbling off sidewalk

SAN DIEGO — A pedestrian was critically injured Wednesday night after being hit by a vehicle in Chula Vista.

The incident was reported at 7:51 p.m. near the intersection of Third Avenue and K Street, according to Chula Vista police.

The man was transported to UC San Diego with life-threatening injuries, according to San Diego Fire Department. He is expected to survive.

Several witnesses told police the man had been obstructing southbound traffic on Third Avenue near K Street shortly before the crash, according to a Chula Vista police statement. He then stepped up onto the sidewalk, but fell back into the lanes and was struck by a vehicle.

The driver was not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and stayed at the scene following the crash, according to the police statement.
