LA MESA, Calif. - Firefighters worked to put out a blazing 2-alarm fire at the Rodeway Inn in La Mesa early Tuesday morning, Heartland Fire said.

The fire was reported at 4:42 a.m. at the Motel at 4210 Spring Street. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later. Several engine crews worked to put out the fire and the hotel was evacuated.

Flames taller than the building itself shot from the attic and could be seen for miles.  Heartland Fire Department evacuated 17 occupied rooms. and no injuries were reported, according to Heartland Fire.

Firefighters managed to get a handle on the fire and knock down a majority of the flames around 5:20 a.m. Small pockets of flames continued to burn through the roof until around 6 a.m.

Spring Street was shut down in both directions as crews battled the blaze and lanes remained closed throughout the morning. Twenty people were reportedly displaced by the fire and the Red  Cross was expected to help them find temporary lodging.

Investigators said the fire apparently started on the second floor. The cause remained  under investigation.

Prolly arson. That eyesore is one of the last crappy places standing in LM. Now, I hope the crappy little Mexican restaurant across the street is next and the place is looking up!

Did you look at some of the “guests” that TV stations have interviewed about the arson, I mean, “fire?” They all look like crackheads! I bet the Rodeway rents out to people by the week or the city pays them to house some homeless. Read all the 1-Star Yelps about this place. Crackpipes are found in the beds there!
