The fire was reported at 4:42 a.m. at the Motel at 4210 Spring Street. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later. Several engine crews worked to put out the fire and the hotel was evacuated.
Flames taller than the building itself shot from the attic and could be seen for miles. Heartland Fire Department evacuated 17 occupied rooms. and no injuries were reported, according to Heartland Fire.
Firefighters managed to get a handle on the fire and knock down a majority of the flames around 5:20 a.m. Small pockets of flames continued to burn through the roof until around 6 a.m.
Spring Street was shut down in both directions as crews battled the blaze and lanes remained closed throughout the morning. Twenty people were reportedly displaced by the fire and the Red Cross was expected to help them find temporary lodging.
Investigators said the fire apparently started on the second floor. The cause remained under investigation.
