SAN DIEGO - A man was in jail Tuesday morning after leading police on a chase that ended with the driver slamming into a tree in Talmadge, police said.

A San Diego police officer spotted the gray Nissan Altima speeding on Interstate 15 near El Cajon Boulevard at 12:18 a.m. Tuesday. When the officer tried to pull the driver over, he took off.

The driver exited the freeway onto El Cajon Boulevard and led police on a chase that lasted nearly ten minutes. He lost control of the car and hit a curb, destroying his front tire at Monroe Avenue near Aldine Drive.  He then crashed into a metal fence and a tree, at which point he tried to run away from the scene but was quickly caught.

The driver suffered a gash to his head and was taken to the hospital before being arrested. He allegedly told one of the medics he had been drinking.

No one else was injured during the pursuit.
