Car hit with bullets in Rolando shooting

SAN DIEGO — A car-to-car shooting near University Square shopping center Friday left a man with a superficial bullet wound, authorities reported.

The assailant, one of two men in a vehicle stopped at a red light in front of the University Avenue strip mall, opened fire on a stationary black Lexus sedan next to it about 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

“I turned, heard the first ‘pop, pop’ – the gunman hanging out the window, squeezing off rounds,” a witness told Fox 5.

The Lexus was struck by at least five bullets, and one of its three occupants suffered a “very minor” graze wound, Lt. Mike Holden said. The victim did not need hospital treatment.

It was unclear what prompted the gunfire.

“We don’t know what the motive was,” Holden said. “At this point, we don’t believe any words were spoken.”

Gang-unit detectives were called in to investigate, the lieutenant said. He declined to say why the case was being handled by that section of the police department.
