SAN DIEGO – A witness chased down a drunken driving suspect and held him for police after an SUV smashed into nine parked cars in Rancho Penasquitos early Thursday.

Police were called to the 10800 block of Carmel Mountain Road just after 1 a.m. by residents who were awakened by a series of loud crashes. Witnesses told them that a man in his 30s driving an SUV with Michigan license plates was heading south on the street when he apparently lost control and hit the cars.

One witness said two men ran from the SUV so he ran after the driver and detained him until officers arrived.

The driver, who was argumentative and uncooperative with police, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

No one was injured.
