VISTA  – A woman was hit and killed by an 18-wheeler early Wednesday while trying to dash across state Route 78 in Vista , the California Highway Patrol said.

The big rig hit the woman on eastbound  Route 78 near Sycamore Avenue just before 1 a.m. She may have been driving an unoccupied vehicle containing a purse and a cell phone that stopped on the road near where she was killed.

Smoke was billowing from the big rig’s engine compartment and debris was scattered in the middle of the lanes following the crash, according to the CHP.

The driver of the big rig was not hurt. The accident blocked the eastbound lanes of the highway between Mar Vista Drive and Sycamore Avenue for several hours. Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Mar Vista and a SigAlert was issued, the CHP said.

Two lanes reopened shortly after 5 a.m.
